A member of Australia’s successful Under-19 World Cup campaign in 2002, Xavier Doherty was handed a state debut by Tasmania in the same season before he played a role in their One-Day Cup triumph in 2004-05.
A steady left-arm orthodox spinner, he took 4-18 in the final as the Tigers won the title again in 2007-08 before he topped the wicket-takers tally in Tasmania’s third triumph two seasons later.
He made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in 2010, taking 4-46 as Australia lost by one wicket, and then made his Test debut against England at the Gabba just three weeks later.
While he was dropped from the Test side a short time afterwards, returning briefly on Australia’s tour of India in 2013, Doherty was a mainstay of Australia’s ODI side for several years.
He missed the 2011 World Cup due to a back injury and was dropped for Australia’s tri-series in Zimbabwe in 2014
