Still in high school, Matt Short looms large as one of the most promising players coming through the Victorian system.
The opening batsman has shone in every tournament he has played in, starting with a century to seal the under-17 national title.
Another ton in the semi-final of under-18 State Championships helped guide the Central Highlands to victory.
He had clearly done enough to earn selection when the Australian under-19 side was announced, and it was no surprise to see his name at the top of the order when they took on New Zealand.
It was even less of a surprise to see him plunder 113 on his international debut.
Another score of 73* helped him finish as the tournament’s leading run-getter with 236 at 47.70.
Not even 18 years old yet, it would be unfair to describe him as a future star. However, with a few seasons in the Futures League, Short could develop into the kind of batsman Australia desperately needs.
