There must be something in the waters down in Tasmania.
Like former Blues Michael Bevan and more recently Ed Cowan, Jackson Bird has taken a liking to his new surroundings at Blundstone Arena, producing some of the finest first-class cricket in the state’s history.
Bird took out the Sheffield Shield Player of the Year award last season, capturing a startling 48 wickets from only seven matches including five five-wicket hauls and two match hauls of ten or more.
The 25-year-old’s efforts booked him a flight to the UK with Australia A in the winter, snaring five wickets from his two first-class fixtures.
He has again made it impossible for the selectors to ignore him, leading the Bupa Sheffield Shield wicket-tally again, this time with 25 scalps from only six games.
Nicknamed ‘Squid’, Bird could provide a slippery weapon for Michael Clarke in the near future.
