Phillip Hughes is pressing to be Australia’s opening batsman alongside Shane Watson this coming season, after winning a recall to the Australian Test team during last summer’s Vodafone Ashes series, replacing the injured Simon Katich.
Katich’s exclusion from the CA contract list has opened the door for Hughes who failed to impress with the bat upon his Test recall, averaging 16.16 in three matches.
Hughes has been earmarked as the future of Australian cricket, with the National Selection Panel keen to give him plenty of game time to become a world beater once more.
Nothing could stop Hughes on his first Test tour, 415 runs in three matches against South Africa, smashing twin centuries in only his second Test – the youngest player to do so.
Hughes finished off last season in fine form, scoring 138 and 93 in the Weet-Bix Sheffield Shield final loss to Tasmania.
