Xavier Doherty has been one of the most consistent State players in the past decade, which has seen him recently rewarded with a call-up to the national team.
Bowling his left-arm orthodox, Doherty is not known for a great deal of flight and turn. However, he has always been an economical bowler, especially in limited overs cricket.
In the 2007/08 season, Doherty snared 4/18 to help guide the Tasmania Tigers to the ODD title. It capped off an excellent year for the spinner, who finished the tournament as the equal leading wicket taker.
Continued success at state level saw Doherty earn his first cap for Australia in an ODI against Sri Lanka. Despite losing the match, the Tasmanian impressed many by taking 4/46 on debut.
Later that year, Doherty played his only two Test matches in the Ashes defeat to England. He managed to take three wickets in a series where wickets were hard to come by for all Australian bowlers.
The Tasmanian tweaker is still a valued member of Australia’s limited overs sides. Doherty has played 43 ODI’s for the country, picking up 46 wickets along the way. His tight bowling has been advantageous during the middle overs, where opposition batsmen have struggled to put him away.
Doherty has also played a handful of matches at T20 level for Australia and the Hobart Hurricanes.
Doherty made his return to the Test arena on the recent VB Tour of India where he worked in tandem with Glenn Maxwell and Nathan Lyon on the spin friendly wickets.
