As a 19-year-old in 2007-08, Ishant Sharma proved in stunning fashion that Ricky Ponting, then at the peak of his powers, could be made to look mortal.
It was at the WACA that Ishant, who stands at an imposing 6ft 4in, introduced himself as a potential world-beater with some fierce spells that included late movement and steepling bounce.
He continued to impress during his first year on the international scene but since then his pace, which could reach as high as 150kph, has dropped and his potency has been reduced.
Injuries haven’t helped him, and he is planning ankle surgery after the Australian tour. In his first 38 Tests he gained 123 wickets at 34.5 and his time in the limited-overs formats has become more carefully managed.
