Profile

Cricket fans in New South Wales will be hoping talented seamer Josh Hazlewood can remain injury free in 2013.

The Bendemeer junior has excelled in all forms throughout his career, but like many young bowlers coming through the ranks, has suffered his fair share of setbacks.

The 22 year old will cherish his first ever wicket for the Blues – that of New Zealand star Ross Taylor in a tour match.

One year later, with barely a match under his belt, Hazlewood was selected to face England in an ODI in Southampton.

In doing so, he became the youngest player to represent Australia at this level at just 19 years of age. Hazelwood picked up the early wicket of Craig Kieswetter, but Australia lost the match by four wickets.

At 196 cm, his height has been one of his greatest weapons as a fast bowler. The extra bounce makes him an awkward customer, while his subtle seam movement is dangerous.

The 2012 season was a standout for Hazlewood, especially in the 20 over game. After missing out on the final of the KFC T20 Big Bash League, the seamer was keen to take out his frustrations at the CLT20 tournament in South Africa.

Hazlewood didn’t disappoint, finishing the campaign with seven wickets and an economy rate of just 4.70. His frugal offerings allowed attacking teammates like Mitchell Starc and Brett Lee to dominate from the other end.

A foot injury robbed him of action after that, but he returned in early 2013, hellbent on destruction.

Five wickets against Tasmania in the Shield prompted his call-up to take on the West Indies in his first T20 international. Regardless of the result, the country lad will always remember his first wicket; Chris Gayle.

Many fans have compared him to Glenn McGrath, which is arguably the highest honour for any up and coming fast bowler.
