Lahiru Thirimanne is an up and coming opening batsman in the Sri Lankan setup. Still only 23, Thirimanne has already played for the national side in all three forms of the game.

His form in the Sri Lankan Premier League has remained solid throughout his short career. The 2009/10 season was a standout, with Thirimanne amassing 709 runs at a hearty 59.08. It was a tournament filled with highlights, with the opener smashing two centuries and five fifties along the way.

With a sense of instability surrounding the Sri Lankan top-order, Thirimanne earned his Test debut during the 2011 tour of England. It was a tough experience for the emerging Thirimanne, who was constantly troubled by the extra bounce and swing from the English quicks. The match fizzled out to a draw, with the debutant scoring 10 and 38.

The youngster hasn’t been able to secure his spot in the Sri Lankan side, adding just six more matches to his tally. He missed out on selection for the recent home series against New Zealand. Given his obvious talent, Thirimanne will be disappointed by a lowly average of just under 20.

His ability to play all around the ground earned him a spot in the ODI side for the tri-series against India and Bangladesh. He scored 22 on debut against the Indians in a match that saw Sri Lanka chase down India’s impressive 279. He appeared in the recent series against New Zealand, but again failed to impress; making scores of 17 and 0.

Poor form could hurt the future star’s chances of playing in Australia. A paltry 22 runs in the World T20 (played in Sri Lanka) might count against him. The steep bounce of the tall Australian quicks will trouble the inexperienced Thirimanne. His versatility in all forms is an asset, however, and impressive performances in the warm-up games could be the boost in confidence he very much needs.
