Profile

While he might have started his career as an attacking batsman for Victoria, Evan Gulbis has spent the past few seasons focusing on his bowling.

He mightn’t be a Tasmanian tearaway, but his impeccable line and length make him a threat every time he touches the ball.

Gulbis was the pick of the bowlers for Tasmania in the Bupa Sheffield Shield final against the Bulls at the end of last season. His four first innings wickets put Tasmania in the box seat, while his removal of Peter Forrest for the second time in the match ended the contest.

The Shield heroics were just reward for a player who has consistently improved since joining the Tigers in 2011.

In 10 Ryobi Cup matches, Gulbis has picked up 10 wickets, including a career best 4/8 against the Warriors in 2011.

He backed up his efforts against Western Australia with another heroic display against the men from Perth in 2012.

At 6/51, he and Faulkner added 114 for the seventh wicket to help the Tigers to a competitive 192. Gulbis backed up his 57* with figures of 4/36, while Faulkner snared 4/32 from his 13 overs to clinch the stunning turnaround.

His averages in 50 over cricket are nothing to be sneezed at. The Latvian native manages around 36 every time he goes out to bat, while he takes his wickets at 18 runs apiece.

Gulbis took six wickets in the recent KFC T20 Big Bash League while playing for the Hobart Hurricanes, but his famed power hitting went missing.

With a stack of pacemen in the squad, Gulbis was able to retain his spot in the starting XI with a string of exemplary performances.

He picked up four scalps against the Blues in Hobart, seven wickets in the match against Victoria, before finishing the season with that pivotal four wicket haul against the Bulls.
