Profile

If nothing else, Sam Rainbird has the greatest name in Australian cricket. In fact, going out on a limb, it’s probably the best name in the sporting world.

The 21 year old is no stranger to Tasmanian cricket, having been on the rookie list for a couple of seasons.

In just his second match in the under-23 side, Rainbird took seven wickets against Victoria, including a brutal spell of 4/19 that saw him remove the now famous Glenn Maxwell for a first ball duck.

Wickets have come naturally for the left-arm seamer, and in the final game of the 2011/12 season, he took four of them against NSW. You only have to look at the batsmen to fall to see what a talent Rainbird might just be. He removed Tim Cruickshank, David Dawson, Scott Henry and Adam Zampa; all first-class cricketers for the Blues.

Rainbird started the 2012/13 season with 13 wickets in his first three matches, suggesting he could be in line for higher honours.

Those dreams became reality when he was called into the Tigers’ squad to take on Queensland in the Bupa Sheffield Shield.

In a match where Tasmania was totally outplayed, Rainbird fought hard with the ball, and was rewarded with the big scalp of Chris Hartley.

The following month, Rainbird was selected to play for the Cricket Australia Chairman’s XI side against Sri Lanka.

In a match conducive to batting and nothing else, Rainbird sent down 22 economical overs against the likes of Kumar Sangakarra and Mahela Jayawardene.
