18 year old Ben McDermott could find himself the first-choice back-up for wicketkeeper Chris Hartley.
His efforts with the bat at the under-19 National Championships grabbed the attention of state selectors, with McDermott belting a memorable 169 against the Blues.
His form warranted a spot on the plane to New Zealand, where he made 51 in the first tour match.
The talented keeper held onto 11 catches in the four matches across the ditch.
The tri-series in Darwin against the Kiwis and India started promisingly for McDermott, with scores of 36 and 50 in the opening matches.
He also managed five catches in the first two games, before adding a handy 41 against New Zealand.
The rookie will have to bide his time in the Queensland grade competition, but should be able to break into the Futures League squad at some point in 2013/14.
