At 21 years of age, Jason Holder is the youngest man on tour for the West Indies. Although he is yet to represent the national side, Holder has already impressed many experts with his pace bowling and handy middle-order batting in the domestic West Indian competitions. Despite his young age, there are already whispers of a likeness to former West Indian great Joel Garner.

Playing for Barbados, Holder made his first-class debut in 2009 against Guyana, where he picked up a wicket in both innings of the drawn match. His consistent form saw him win the Lord Gavron Award for the best young cricketer in the country.

The promising career continued to blossom when Holder was rushed into the side’s under-19 squad for the World Cup in New Zealand. Holder justified his award winning season by taking a team best 13 wickets during the tournament.

Holder’s form saw him rewarded with a spot in the West Indies side that took on India A in 2012. Although they lost the series, Holder once again impressed with a five wicket haul in the second innings of the first match. It was his third first-class five-for, but easily his most important.

The six foot seven giant has worked hard on his new-ball bowling, and is aiming to eliminate the odd bad ball in his repertoire. His bowling at the death in T20 cricket has earned him 17 caps in the Caribbean T20 League. He picked up seven wickets in the 2012/13 tournament, and was also very economical.

His height could cause plenty of problems if he is called upon during the ODI series against Australia. The tour will give him an insight into the rigours of international cricket, and should prepare him well for any future opportunities. If he does make his debut, expect it to be in the pace-friendly conditions in Perth. Hopefully for the West Indies, Holder fulfils his potential and reaches the Joel Garner hype that people are already talking about.
