No-one can question whether cricket is the most-talked about sport in Australia. Well, at least according to Facebook trends released tonight.
Ashes all the hype on Facebook
'Cricket' was not only the most-talked about sport in Australia this year, but it is also the third-most talked about topic in general that users of Facebook posted about (we have included the full lists below for you to peruse).
And with Australia winning a second straight Commonwealth Bank Ashes Test against England today, Facebook's trends were again dominated by those talking about the series in the past five days.
Some of the statistics Facebook provided us with are staggering, and include;
- For the second game of the Ashes series, there were over 2 million cricket-related mentions on Facebook from early in the morning on Thursday December 5 through to Monday afternoon, after play concluded.
- In Australia, Mitchell Johnson was the most buzzed about player, with mentions peaking around 1pm on Saturday December 7, then Stuart Broad, followed by Ryan Harris, Jimmy Anderson and Michael Clarke.
- Biggest increase in mentions of players was of Johnson (4,922 per cent), then Clarke (1,589 per cent), followed by David Warner (1,839 per cent).
- For this Ashes game, in the UK, the most buzzed about players were Broad, then Harris, then Johnson, then Anderson followed by Clarke. The biggest increase in mentions was of Peitersen (34,024 per cent) followed by Carberry (14,055 per cent).
- The most mentioned terms of the Ashes experience were "cricket", "bowling", "century", "innings" and "DRS". The biggest increase in mentions was of the term "wicket" (3,760 per cent) followed by the term innings 1,613 per cent.
- In terms of the cricket experience on Facebook, the most mentioned terms were "cricket", "Ashes", "Aussies", "captain" and "bowling". The biggest increase in mentions was of the term "wicket" 4,545 per cent, followed by the term "Adelaide Oval".
