Voges set to replace Langer: report

WACA board to consider lead candidate for WA and Perth Scorchers head coach role later this week

Justin Langer's replacement as Western Australia’s coach could be announced as soon as this week, with former Test batsman and Warriors legend Adam Voges reportedly the frontrunner to take over the reins.

Fairfax have reported Voges has beaten out a number of other candidates, including current Warriors assistant Kade Harvey and former Test opener Simon Katich, for the job to lead both WA and the Perth Scorchers.

In a statement to cricket.com.au, the WACA insisted it has not yet made a call on a new coach but said a candidate will be put to the WACA Board for approval this week.

Langer was appointed as the national men’s team’s head coach earlier this month following the resignation of Darren Lehmann on the recent tour of South Africa.

"No decision has been made on the appointment for Western Australia’s Head Coaching role," a WACA spokesperson said.

"The process is currently underway and a preferred applicant will be presented to the WACA board later this week, with a public announcement to follow shortly after."

Voges only ended his 15-year playing career in the west after finishing up as captain of KFC Big Bash side Perth Scorchers in February, having called time on his tenure with the Warriors at the end of the 2016-17 season.

Should he be handed the job, the 38-year-old will have some sizeable shoes to fill.

While a Sheffield Shield title was elusive during Langer's six-year reign, the Scorchers collected three BBL titles in four years to become the standout domestic T20 outfit in Australia.

Langer also helped mould the likes of Mitchell Marsh, Ashton Agar, Hilton Cartwright, Cameron Bancroft and Andrew Tye into international cricketers, while helping elder statesmen Shaun Marsh, Michael Klinger and Voges blossom later in their careers.

While Voges has limited coaching experience, his 55 matches at the helm of WA's Sheffield Shield side between 2007 and 2017 is matched only by John Inverarity, who also notched 55 games as skipper.

The former batsman’s experience in the Australia's Test side would also hold him in good stead, having finished with a remarkable average of 61.87 from 20 matches. He also played 38 international limited-overs games.

Voges last summer mentored WA's Under 19s side, explaining that his coaching style had been shaped by both Langer and Lehmann.

"This is probably my first crack at it (coaching),” Voges told the ABC in December.

"I’m enjoying it so far, it’s nice to be able to help these guys at this level. I’ve had some really good coaches … Justin Langer, Darren Lehmann, a few of my WA coaches in Tom Moody and those sorts of guys.

"You take little bits and pieces out of what they do and try to mould your own sort of methods around your coaching style."
