Aussie trio capped in Baggy Green

A total of five players will make their debut in the historic day-night Commonwealth Bank Women's Ashes Series Test at North Sydney Oval, with three Australians capped in Baggy Green.

England captain Heather Knight won the coin toss at North Sydney Oval and opted to bat first in a match the tourists must win to keep the multi-format Women's Ashes series alive.

Australia opener Beth Mooney, leg-spinner Amanda-Jade Wellington and bowling allrounder Tahlia McGrath all received their Baggy Green caps on the North Sydney outfield.

That left the uncapped allrounder Ashleigh Gardner and seamer Lauren Cheatle on the sidelines for today's Test against England.

England capped two debutants of their own, with Sophie Ecclestone and Fran Wilson receiving their caps from former England captain Charlotte Edwards, with Jenny Gunn and Kate Cross left on the sidelines. 

Australia coach Matthew Mott said on Wednesday the selection panel had been very tempted to play four fast bowlers, with McGrath picked ahead of the off-spinning Gardner, while the left-arm orthodox spin of Jess Jonassen saw her get the nod ahead of Cheatle on a dry North Sydney pitch.

Gardner's omission heaps the slow-bowling responsibility on Wellington, the big-turning leg-spinner from South Australia, and Jonassen, who will playing her second Ashes Test.

Despite taking just the one wicket in the three-match ODI series, Wellington consistently beat the bat of the England right-handers and kept the tourists and hosts alike on their toes and her inclusion as a wicket-taking threat is consistent with Australia's 'fearless' mantra for the series.

"I think it is always something that Australians have had a bit of an affection with, isn't it? A nice leg-spinner," Australia skipper Rachael Haynes said in Coffs Harbour.

"Amanda is an enormous talent, there's no doubt about it, and it's really great that she's always in the game, you feel like something could happen any ball.

"It is great as a fielding team as well that you feel there is an opportunity around the corner. I hope she takes this opportunity and runs with it."

Having missed out on the ODI leg of the multi-format Women's Ashes, Mooney cemented her spot in the Test XI with a chanceless century in Canberra last week in Australia's sole pink-ball practice match against an ACT Invitational XI.

Mooney posted 118 before retiring at Manuka Oval and will link up with Nicole Bolton at the top of the order to form what Bolton jokes as Australia's new version of the prodigious Matthew Hayden-Justin Langer partnership.

"She's obviously the brute from Queensland and I'm little Justin Langer from WA," Bolton told reporters in Sydney on Tuesday.

"What we do so well is we play to different areas.

"Although we're both left-handers our strengths are really different.

"As a bowling attack we can be quite difficult to nut down a solid plan to.

"When one player is going the other plays the support role and I think it worked quite well in the World Cup."
