England star ruled out of Australia clash

England spearhead Anya Shrubsole won't line up against Australia on Friday, ruled out with a shoulder injury

England have been dealt a blow ahead of their first T20I tri-series match against Australia on Friday, with pace spearhead Anya Shrubsole ruled out with a right shoulder injury

Shrubsole landed awkwardly on the joint during a warm-up match at Mumbai's Brabourne Stadium on Tuesday, but the news wasn't as bad as initially feared with scans revealing a shoulder strain.

It's enough to keep the right-arm pace bowler out of Friday's match, but England are hopeful she will return for their second match against India on Sunday.

"She's not going to be available tomorrow," Knight confirmed ahead of Australia training on Thursday.

"But the scans show there's no serious damage so hopefully she makes it for the next game."

Shrubsole's injury means England will be without three of their biggest stars against Australia on Friday. Fellow pace star Katherine Brunt has already been ruled out of the tour due to a back injury picked up during her stint with the Scorchers in the Rebel WBBL, while wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor has been rested from the series.

Australia off to great start in T20 tri-series

Rather than focusing on the missing players Knight said series was an opportunity for England to figure out their best T20I XI and take a look at new players. England's three uncapped squad members are a chance to make their international debuts against Australia on Friday.

"The goal on this tour for us is to know a little more about a few players and what potentially our XI is going to look like at the World T20 in November," Knight said.

"We've got an inexperienced side and with that can come some inconsistency but I'm also really excited to see how we'll go.

"The new girls have been brilliant, they've really put their names forward for selections and that's what we want.

"There's some exciting cricketers there, Kate George is a left-arm quick, Bryony Smith at the top of the order hits ball hard and Alice Davidson-Richards in middle order gives it a whack and is handy with the ball."

Last time England and Australia met was in the final match of the Ashes last November.

Australia retained trophy in the multi-format series with two T20Is to go but Knight's team finished on a high note, winning the final two T20s and ensuring the series finished tied at eight points apiece.

It was also the last time the England squad played together, and their captain says they'll draw confidence from the way they finished the series down under.

"We were rapt to finish the Ashes with a 2-1 T20 series win," Knight said.

"It was a really exciting way to end the Ashes tour, so hopefully we take some momentum from that."
