Fourth Test wash-up: Every player rated

Australia legend Mike Hussey and former England skipper Michael Vaughan review the performances of the respective XIs

Australia player ratings: Mike Hussey

DAVID WARNER – 9/10

A fantastic first-innings hundred and then he changed his game completely in the second innings to play the situation of the match. He would have been disappointed to throw it away and not get another hundred, but all in all a very good performance.

Warner leads Boxing Day rush with 21st Test century

CAMERON BANCROFT – 4/10

Two good starts but he couldn't go on with it. He'll be disappointed by that and he'll desperately want to get a big score in Sydney to cement his place in the Australian team. But he looked good again.

USMAN KHAWAJA – 3.5/10

A bit like Bancroft, a couple of starts but just couldn't get going, which he'll be disappointed with. I gave him an extra half point for that unbelievable catch at third man to dismiss Stuart Broad.

STEVE SMITH – 8.5/10

He probably loses half a mark or so because he put down Alastair Cook twice, even though they were two very tough chances. But again, he's been amazingly prolific with the bat and he held the innings together on the final day as they played out a draw.

Summer of Smith shines on with 23rd Test ton

SHAUN MARSH – 6.5/10

Another half-century and he's been pretty consistent throughout the series. A good first innings, he would have liked to have gone out with it, and couldn't get going in the second innings. But a solid game from him.

Marsh marches on with another Ashes fifty

MITCHELL MARSH – 5/10

He missed out in the first innings and couldn't get a wicket with the ball, so it was a tough first four days for him. But he fought well with the bat on the last day to ensure England couldn't force a victory.

TIM PAINE – 6.5/10

A bit of a start with the bat before he got out, but I thought he kept really, really well. He's looked really good behind the stumps and that's his main job. A good solid game from him.

PAT CUMMINS – 8/10

He got four wickets in the first innings and also showed amazing character and spirit when he was obviously really sick with that tummy bug. To be able to come out and still put in a great effort on a pitch that didn't have much pace or bounce in it was fantastic.

Watch all 10 of England's first-innings wickets

JACKSON BIRD – 3.5/10

I thought he tried hard, but the pitch didn't really suit him whatsoever. He didn't get a wicket, but it's not easy to return after a year out of Test cricket and make an impact straight away, especially on a pitch like this.

JOSH HAZLEWOOD – 7/10

I thought he bowled really well again. He just starts his spells so well, he's always right on the money from the first ball and there's no looseners. He really worked hard again on an unresponsive pitch.

NATHAN LYON – 7/10

He picked up three wickets and, again, this was despite there being nothing in the pitch for him. There was no rough, no spin and it was a slow surface. He relies on that sort of stuff to get wickets.

England player ratings: Michael Vaughan

ALASTAIR COOK – 10/10

It can’t be anything but after breaking all those records, carrying his bat, getting himself on that board downstairs in the members’ bar. It’s 10 out 10 for the ex-skipper.

Cook carries his bat in epic MCG knock

MARK STONEMAN – 4/10

I think he’s getting to that stage now where he desperately needs a score for his own confidence and a big score. He’s playing okay but it was an opportunity missed on this wicket, where there was no fear of the short ball.

JAMES VINCE – 4/10

He gets an extra point for taking that catch to dismiss David Warner. He’s going to Sydney needing a big score to establish himself in the team. With so much competition around he’ll need a number. Sydney will be his 12th Test. That’s a long time to go without a hundred. He desperately needs one.

JOE ROOT – 6.5/10

Got 61 but missed out on a hundred again. We’re frustrated watching him but you can only imagine how frustrated he is. His captaincy was okay. I thought he could have been a bit more creative and attacking on the fourth afternoon.

Captain Root passes fifty but fails to push on again

DAWID MALAN – 5/10

He’s really the story of the tour for me and the stand-out for England. He could quite easily end up at No.3 next summer. He didn’t get a score here but he looks the part.

JONNY BAIRSTOW – 6/10

Very, very good behind the stumps and is getting better and better. With the bat he looked alright then played a poor shot, like most of the batsmen out this week.

Jonny Bairstow takes one-handed classic

MOEEN ALI – 1/10

I can’t give him anything but I can’t give him a zero, I don’t want to be so mean. He tried to come out and play different here and he’s offering absolutely nothing with bat or ball. I think the best thing for him would be to be taken out of the firing line for Sydney. His innings here was the sign of a muddled mind so I just think he needs a breather.

Moeen makes easy prey for hungry Lyon

CHRIS WOAKES – 7/10

He did well. Batted very, very well and hung around. I think this is his best week as an England player. I know he didn’t get a huge amount of wickets but I thought he was the pick of the seamers. He’s everything you look for in a character for the team. He just needs to bring a bit more in the skill department.

TOM CURRAN – 5/10

He created a little bit of energy on debut and he’s not been scared of trying a few things. He’s got the right style of character at this level. I’m not saying he’s going to be a world-beater at this stage but he needs to just keep improving.

STUART BROAD – 9/10

He’s been outstanding. The fact is he’s responded to criticism and he’s been prodded by the likes of me. I love those kind of responses. All I would say is keep doing it. Keep those knees running in high and try and get the pace up more consistently because when he bowls quickly he has more of an effect. I liked the way he batted, showing a lot of courage in his half-century. It’s not easy going down there when you’re getting peppered. We want to see more of the same in Sydney.

Broad adds to Aussie frustration with fifty

JAMES ANDERSON – 7.5/10

Jimmy’s Jimmy. He’s a seven out of 10 every week but this week I’ll give him a seven-and-a-half. He’ a wonderful bowler and he’s been really good on this tour. A few months ago people were saying he’s coming towards the end but I think he’s pretty much decided he can go when he wants – the end of the 2019 Ashes in England.
