Shane Warne (1993-2007)

Tests: 36. Wickets: 195. Ave: 23.25. BB: 8-71. 5W/I: 11. 10W/M: 4

For almost 14 years, Shane Keith Warne was the figure in Ashes cricket. The King of Spin took an unprecedented 195 wickets against England though none were better – or have become more famous – than his very first ball in Ashes cricket: The Gatting Ball. The highlights reel afterward was seemingly never-ending: 8-71 at the Gabba (in which the flipper played a starring role); a hat-trick on his home ground, the MCG; an even 40 wickets in the epic 2005 series; and a magical leg break to claim wicket No.700 on Boxing Day 2006. And through it all, he not only revived the art of leg-spin, but made cricket's oldest rivalry pure entertainment for a contemporary audience.

Nathan Lyon (2013-15)

Tests: 13. Wickets: 44. Ave: 29.84. BB: 5-50. 5W/I: 1. 10W/M: 0

Nathan Lyon was dropped in his first Ashes in 2013 but the off-spinner has been resilient throughout his career and he duly bounced back quickly, taking seven wickets at Durham in the same series and ending the spinners' revolving door in Australia's Test team post-Warne. The stats listed above are before the Magellan Ashes started, and despite operating in conditions that have generally better suited fast bowlers, Lyon's contributions have been consistently impressive, highlighted by his 19 wickets in the 2013-14 series (including 5-50 at the MCG) – a series in which he completely out-bowled rival off-spinner Graeme Swann (seven wickets at 80).

Stuart MacGill (1998-2003)

Tests: 6. Wickets: 39. Ave: 24.71. BB: 7-50. 5W/I: 3. 10W/M: 1

Opportunities for Stuart MacGill throughout the Warne era were few and far between, though when they presented themselves, he invariably made them count. The big-turning leggie was at his best during the 1998-99 Ashes in Australia, when he claimed a series-high 27 wickets at 17.70 and used his wrong'un to devastating effect. Twelve of those wickets came in the final Test at the SCG when, in a rare showing alongside Warne, he ripped the tourists apart with 5-57 and 7-50. Picked in Melbourne and Sydney in the absence of an injured Warne in 2002-03, he claimed another dozen victims to cement his reputation as a world-class leg-spinner.
