Australia out to rebuild reputation

England ODI series an opportunity to move on from the scandals of South Africa and cast an eye towards next year's World Cup

Australia admit they're on a mission to rebuild their reputation but won't be taking a backwards step against England in an ODI series they believe they can win.

The Aussies are missing suspended batsmen David Warner and Steve Smith, while fast bowlers Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood plus allrounder Mitchell Marsh are all missing through injury.

New captain Tim Paine believes it's an opportunity for a fresh group to move on from the scandals of South Africa as they cast an eye towards next year's World Cup.

"There's no doubt our reputation as a cricketing nation took a bit of a battering from South Africa," Paine told journalists at Lord's on Wednesday.

"That was really difficult for the players to come to terms with what had happened and what we'd done, but coming to England now, having a few new faces, new coach, just getting back into cricket is a great opportunity to move on and show the cricketing world where we have made some changes.

"They're not huge changes that we're making, just (tweaking) some things that had started to slip over a period of time."

Australia's first chance to show those changes will be on Thursday night against the Jason Gillespie-coached Sussex in a day-night tour match (from 11pm AEST) in which the county has named a full-strength side including pace sensation Jofra Archer, who burst on to the scene last summer with the Hobart Hurricanes.

Short reflects on IPL lessons and ODI ambitions

The Aussies have another match against county opposition in Middlesex at Lord's on Saturday before the main course of five ODIs against England, and Paine is confident he has the squad that can reverse a 4-1 defeat suffered at home last summer.

"Absolutely we can. It's an opportunity for other guys to come in, particularly in those batting spots and fill the void," the Tasmanian said.

"From a bowling sense, not having our 'Big 3' here is a really great opportunity for some guys who are probably a little bit better than what people around the world know, to be honest.

"They've got some really good skills, they've got some good pace, and we come here with some real confidence we can win this.

"We know the task ahead of us is enormous and England have been playing some quality one-day cricket. It's a great test, we're going to know where we're at, but we don't see any reason why we can't win this series."

Langer and Trevor Hohns, the National Selection Panel chairman who is with the squad in England, will have one eye on next summer's World Cup.

"If we want to come here and win the World Cup next year we have got to have really good depth, really good competition in Australian cricket so it's really hard to get into the first XI," Langer said.

"It opens up some opportunities. It sounds like a cliché but that's what we're selling our players on: this is a great opportunity for us to build a team."

The Australians have made Lord's their training base, with three sessions and a warm-up match at the famous venue. For Paine, it was his first visit since July 2010, when he received Baggy Green No.414 on the outfield from Ricky Ponting, alongside another debutant in Steve Smith.

"One of the first things we did was walk a slow lap together just to sort of soak it in, the history and tradition that come here," Paine said.

"We also had a mention of the World Cup final here in 12 months as, I suppose, a pipe dream for our guys to continue to work really hard towards."
