Aussie batters face torrid net sessions

As Australia's bowlers fire up for Virat Kohli and co, the batters in the squad will be on the receiving end in the race to secure a top six spot

Travis Head is predicting fierce net sessions will decide Australia's line-up for the first Test against India.

The Australian squad ramp up their preparations today with training at the Adelaide Oval for the series-opening first Domain Test starting on Thursday.

And Head, who is among seven batsmen vying for six spots in the Test team, is predicting some torrid internal battles in the nets.

Head hopeful of home Test berth

Head appears assured of playing his first home Test with coach Justin Langer saying the last batting slot is between Victorian duo Marcus Harris and Peter Handscomb.

But Head is reluctant to declare himself a certain starter before what he says will be challenging training sessions for batsmen against Australia's bowlers.

"I like to compete in the nets ... you have to compete in the nets against our bowlers," Head said.

"It's hard work. You don't get anything easy.

"They will test us out in the next three days which will be good because then you walk out to the middle knowing that you're prepared well and ready to go.

"If you can get through these (training sessions) you can get through anyone in the world, so it will be an exciting week; a challenging week facing them."

India, however, have opted not to hold an official training session on Monday, although captain and inspirational batsman Virat Kohli has already shown a propensity to order extra sessions on this tour.

Head said Australia's bowlers would be tasked with finding holes in the armour of the Indian megastar.

"If they can put him under enough pressure, anybody in the world is human," said Head.

"He's an extremely good player but we have got the bowlers to do the job.

"As a bowling unit they are one of the best in the world, so it's going to be an exciting battle and hopefully we come out on top."
