Access all areas: Cricket's new frontier

Change in Australian broadcasters could herald a new era of more open access to the nation's elite cricketers

Australia's change rooms could be opened up to fans this summer amid plans for greater access than ever before to players.

New coach Justin Langer said there was a "distinct possibility" that cameras could take viewers inside the Australian team's inner sanctum with the coming summer to herald a new era on and off the field.

The Cricket Network's extensive on-the-ground digital coverage of Australian cricket will be boosted this summer after Seven and Fox Sports jointly signed a $1.182bn deal to broadcast the sport in Australia for the next six seasons.

Langer and Test captain Tim Paine have helped lay the groundwork for a more open Australia set-up as they seek to win back the public faith and trust following events in Cape Town.

Part of that could see the Australian players making themselves more accessible to broadcast and digital media than ever before.

Asked if he would be open to having a cricket version of the 'Roaming Brian' interview made popular in Australian Rules football by Seven's Brian Taylor, Langer was receptive.

"I got the distinct impression from (Seven West Media chairman Kerry Stokes) that there will be a lot of access to the players and the change rooms," Langer said at the Perth launch of the network's cricket coverage.

Seven's coverage will be orchestrated by head of cricket Dave Barham, the man credited with the innovations behind Channel Ten's coverage of the BBL over the past four summers.

"The Big Bash coverage changed a lot in terms of access," Barnham said at the launch event held at Optus Stadium.

"I remember when Kevin Pietersen went out there (mic'd up) pretty much his first time and said, 'I'm going to hit this ball to square leg'. He hit the ball to square leg and we heard it and we saw it and I thought, 'This is different, this has changed'.

"He was brave enough and good enough to do it and everyone else followed suit."

It will be Langer's first summer in charge of the Australian cricket team after the Western Australian was appointed earlier this year following Darren Lehmann's resignation in the wake of the South Africa ball-tampering scandal.

Langer took charge for his first series last month in the UK for a white-ball tour, and will helm his first Test series abroad in October against Pakistan in the UAE.

The men's home international summer begins with a three-match ODI series against South Africa from November 4. Australia will also play a T20 against the Proteas, then three more against India.

Four Tests against Virat Kohli's side follow in the centrepiece to a hectic schedule, before three ODIs in a week in mid-January. Two Tests against Sri Lanka conclude the men's home international schedule.

All up, Seven will broadcast six Tests, three women's T20 internationals, three women's ODIs, 43 BBL|08 matches including the finals and 23 WBBL matches. Fox Sports will broadcast all that plus men's ODIs and T20 internationals and 16 exclusive BBL|08 games.

"It's a massive undertaking, 500 hours of cricket," Barham said. "Just pulling it together from scratch ... is a big task.

"But what do they say, how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. It's a bit like that."

'Underneath the Southern Cross'

Viewers saw Australia's Test XI perform their team song, Underneath the Southern Cross, in public for the first time following the final wicket of the 2014 Sydney Test that completed a 5-0 whitewash against England.
