BBL|08 team of the tournament so far

Cricket.com.au crunches the numbers and picks a star-studded Big Bash League XI

With 25 games remaining in the KFC BBL regular season, we've selected our best XI of the tournament so far.

Power hitters D'Arcy Short and Chris Lynn feature in a star-studded XI, along with imports Rashid Khan, Tom Curran and Jos Buttler.

With teams playing 14 home-and-away matches in an expanded 59-game season, plenty can change between now and the start of finals, but here's our best of BBL|08.

D'Arcy Short (Hobart Hurricanes)

Mat: 7 | Inns: 7 | Runs: 355 | Best: 96no | Ave: 59.16 | SR 141.43 | 50s: 4

The powerful left-hander produced a record-breaking BBL|07, scoring the most runs ever in a season, and he has continued that form this summer with four fine half-centuries as the Hurricanes look to go one step further after last season's defeat to Adelaide Strikers in the final.

Short sizzles with MCG run-fest

Jos Buttler (Sydney Thunder, wicketkeeper)

Mat: 7 | Inns: 7 | Runs: 273 | Best: 89 | Ave: 39.00 | SR 135.14 | 50s: 3

Englishman Buttler won't feature again in BBL|08 because of international duties, but he was a model of consistency for the Thunder at the top of the order, with his superb ramp shots a highlight. Buttler posted a career-best BBL score of 89 from 53 balls against the Hurricanes.

Chris Lynn (Brisbane Heat, captain)

Mat: 7 | Inns: 7 | Runs: 313 | Best: 84 | Ave: 52.16 | SR 133.19 | 50s: 3

The competition's most dangerous six-hitter is yet to post a single figure score in BBL|08, with knocks of 84no, 66no and 54 lifting his average above 50 from seven games. A dominant presence in the important No.3 position.

Ashton Turner (Perth Scorchers)

Mat: 8 | Inns: 8 | Runs: 300 | Best: 60no | Ave: 50.00 | SR 135.14 | 50s: 2

After an up and down start to the tournament, the Scorchers skipper has contributed 60no, 47, 43no and 60 in his past four knocks and has often lifted his team out of trouble. Was called up to Australia's ODI squad recently, an indication of how highly rated the 25-year-old is.

Tremendous Turner smashes Sixers

Matthew Wade (Hobart Hurricanes)

Mat: 7 | Inns: 7 | Runs: 231 | Best: 85 | Ave: 33.00 | SR 133.52 | 50s: 2

This season's leading JLT Sheffield Shield run-scorer has also been firing in the BBL and helps form a lethal opening combination with Short at the Hurricanes.

Jordan Silk (Sydney Sixers)

Mat: 8 | Inns: 8 | Runs: 207 | Best: 67no | Ave: 34.50 | SR 121.50 | 50s: 1

Silk has won selection on the back of his ability to be a cool head in the middle-order for the Sixers. The underrated right-hander has posted four scores of 30 or more and is a gun fieldsman.

Sixers Silk stands tall under pressure

Tom Curran (Sydney Sixers)

Mat: 8 | Inns: 6 | Runs: 123 | Best: 62 | Ave: 41.00 | SR 146.42 | 50s: 1 | Wickets: 11 | BBI: 3-18 | Ave: 19.00 | Econ: 7.24

The England quick has proven a handy addition for the Sixers as they chase a finals berth, establishing himself as a regular wicket-taker and dangerous batsman.

Rashid Khan (Adelaide Strikers)

Mat: 8 | Wickets: 13 | BBI: 3-19 | Ave: 12.07 | Econ: 4.90

Rated the world's best T20 spinner, the 20-year-old leggie from Afghanistan continues to bamboozle opposition batsmen and is currently the competition's equal-leading wicket-taker. His economy rate of under five almost defies belief.

Steve O'Keefe (Sydney Sixers)

Mat: 8 | Wickets: 13 | BBI: 3-19 | Ave: 17.23 | Econ: 7.22

The experienced spinner remains a constant threat and has only gone wicketless once in eight matches. Looms as a crucial factor in the Sixers' finals chances.

Kane Richardson (Melbourne Renegades)

Mat: 6 | Wickets: 11 | BBI: 3-22 | Ave: 17.81 | Econ: 8.22

Richardson has taken key wickets in the power plays for the Renegades and has enjoyed playing at Marvel Stadium, claiming nine wickets from three games at his team's home ground.

Riley Meredith (Hobart Hurricanes)

Mat: 7 | Wickets: 11 | BBI: 4-21 | Ave: 18.54 | Econ: 7.55

Tipped as a potential Australia player, the 22-year-old has impressed for the Hurricanes, having been a late inclusion in Hobart's best XI following the injury to English quick Tymal Mills.

Rapid Riley collects four scalps

Daniel Sams (Sydney Thunder, 12th man)

Mat: 8 | Inns: 7 | Runs: 135 | Best: 42 | Ave: 19.28 | SR 164.63 | 50s: 0 | Wickets: 11 | BBI: 3-5 | Ave: 20.27 | Econ 8.92

Could warrant a place in the XI after a fine all-round tournament where he has shone with both bat and ball. Can take big wickets and clear the ropes.
