Stokes sidelined for Aussie matches

England confirm a hamstring tear will keep Ben Stokes benched for the one-day matches against Australia

Ben Stokes' long wait to face Australia on the cricket field will continue, with the England allrounder ruled out of the early exchanges of this month's limited overs series.

Stokes tore his left hamstring during fielding practice for England's ongoing second Test against Pakistan at Headingley, in Leeds. Scans confirmed a tear and after further assessment he has now been sidelined from England's ODI against Scotland on June 10 and the "first part" of the ODI series with Australia.

"(Stokes) will be unavailable for the first part of the five-match ODI series against Australia as he recovers from a left hamstring tear," an ECB spokesperson said.

"Stokes will be assessed later this week. He will continue his rehabilitation programme and will return to his county side Durham on Monday."

Batsman Dawid Malan has been added to England's ODI squad for the Scotland game, while Sam Billings, who last summer played with the Sydney Sixers in the KFC BBL, has been drafted into the team to face Australia.

Stokes has not faced Australia since last year's Champions Trophy tournament, missing an Ashes Test series, five-match ODI series and T20 tri-series also involving New Zealand after he was sidelined by the ECB following his alleged involvement in a street brawl in Bristol last September.

The flame-haired allrounder has pleaded not guilty to a charge of affray and will face court for a trial from August 6, just three days before England's second Test against India this winter.
