Update: Dottin, Harris recovering after clash

The West Indian suffered multiple fractures to cheekbone but Laura Harris recovering well after sickening incident

Brisbane Heat star Deandra Dottin has sustained multiple fractures to her cheekbone following a fielding accident in Tuesday’s Women’s Big Bash League match against the Melbourne Stars.

Dottin suffered the injury after an excruciating collision with teammate Laura Harris while attempting to stop a boundary in the Allan Border Field outfield.

The West Indian allrounder was taken to hospital and while the Heat have confirmed she’s avoided serious injury to her eyes and mouth, she may need titanium plates to help repair some of the damage to her face.

Dottin, who was discharged from hospital late yesterday, will consult with Brisbane Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon Dr John Arvier later this week to decide a timeline for her return.

“I am ok now after a very painful head clash today with my team mate,” Dottin said on her Facebook page.

“I went to hospital for scans which have now revealed that I have multiple fractures of my cheek bone.

“Eye socket and eyesight is fine, jaw and teeth fine.”

“I am out of hospital now recovering before a specialist appointment with a face surgeon Thursday. At this stage it is believed I will require titanium plates to fix the issues.”

“All is going to be fine!”

Match recap: Heat defeat Stars

Harris, making her first appearance for the Heat this season after returning from a broken finger, received medical treatment at AB Field and is recovering well.

Her sister Grace, who crossed from the Heat to the Melbourne Renegades for WBBL|02, had a light-hearted dig at her sibling on social media.

The collision occurred with the Stars at 0-72 in the 11th over of their run chase when Melbourne Stars captain Meg Lanning lofted Heat medium-pacer Haidee Birkett over midwicket.

The ball landed between Dottin and Harris just inside the rope and in their desperation to stop the boundary, the converging pair collided at pace and clashed heads.

Both suffered heavy falls, Harris hitting the picket fence hard while Dottin appeared to land on a team kit bag just in front of the fence.

Dottin was stretchered from the field after the incident and rushed to hospital, while Harris didn’t return to the field but remained at the ground, as the Heat remarkably managed to overcome the Stars by five runs despite the loss of two of their players.

The head clash came a day after Southern Stars fast bowler Holly Ferling was ruled out of this match due to a concussion sustained during a match between the two sides on Boxing Day.

Ferling hit her head heavily on the ground while trying to take a catch on the boundary.

The 21-year-old was attended to immediately by the Heat medical staff but she waved them away and continued fielding for rest of the innings.

The Heat play next against the Sydney Thunder on Monday and Tuesday at Blacktown.
