Ex-England coach Silverwood lands new role

Former England head coach Chris Silverwood has been appointed head coach of Sri Lanka's men's team for two years.

Silverwood stepped down from his England position in February after the team lost the five-Test Ashes series in Australia 4-0.

His first assignment with the Sri Lankan team will be a two-Test series in Bangladesh next month.

He will then face Australia again in a three-format campaign at home in June and July.

Sri Lanka has been without a full-time head coach since South African Mickey Arthur stepped down late last year.

"I am very excited to be on board with Sri Lanka and I cannot wait to get over to Colombo and get started," Silverwood said in an Sri Lanka Cricket statement.

"They have a talented and passionate group of players and I am really looking forward to meeting up with the players and coaching staff very soon."

Australia and England remain without a full-time head coach following the departures of Justin Langer and Silverwood respectively after the Ashes.

Australia's interim men's team coach Andrew McDonald, the frontrunner to take over the position full-time, has revealed he has spoken to Cricket Australia about taking the job.

McDonald has emerged as the clear favourite to succeed Langer and has earned strong public endorsements from numerous players, including Test captain Pat Cummins.
