Tremain moves on from Test omission

Victorian quick re-focuses on domestic duties with his state after missing out on Test call-up

For most professional athletes, the expression 'one game at a time' gets thrown around fairly casually from press conference to press conference.

But for Victoria quick Chris Tremain, the reigning JLT Sheffield Shield player of the season, it's the only way he approaches his cricket.

And having been overlooked last week for Australia's Test squad to take on Pakistan, a decision questioned by former Test skipper Allan Border and ex Test quick Stuart Clark, the 27-year-old says he won't be changing that approach.

"I've never gone into a game worrying about (national) selection," the right-armer said on Tuesday. "It's not something that motivates me.

"If you go into a game thinking about selection for the next one, you’re not thinking about the one you’re playing in and generally that’s a pretty bad sign."

Tremain could count himself unlucky to not be preparing for his first Test tour following another stand out JLT Sheffield Shield season, which saw him take his tally to 93 wickets at 20.12 over the past two summers.

With mainstays Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins unavailable for the Pakistan series, it loomed as a golden chance for Tremain to add a Baggy Green to his four ODI appearances for Australia.

Instead, Mitchell Starc will likely be partnered by Tremain’s veteran teammate Peter Siddle or one of Queensland bolters Michael Neser and Brendan Doggett.

Rather than lament his omission, Tremain says it underlined the depth of fast-bowling talent around the country.

"Australia have such a good bowling attack when the big three are ready to go," said Tremain.

Tremain claims seven scalps for Victoria

"And even when they don’t, we saw Billy Stanlake and Jhye Richardson (in ODI cricket this year) showing that they were very good, along with Kane Richardson.

"I don’t think there is a shortage of fast bowlers in Australia."

Instead of looking ahead to further international selection, Tremain is instead focused on Victoria’s JLT Cup clash with Tasmania in Townsville on Wednesday.

In a blow for the Tigers, Tasmania will be without star allrounder James Faulkner after he sustained a calf injury playing for Lancashire in Birmingham last weekend and was ruled out of the tournament.

His replacement in Tasmania's squad is paceman Gurinder Sandhu, who has made the move south from New South Wales in the off-season.

Tremain is weary of the 25-year-old, another former ODI representative, who is best known for his skills with the white ball in hand.

"He’s a really good, proven white-ball bowler," Tremain said.

"He’s represented his country and done really well in conditions like this.

"He’ll get the seam to stand up and get it to swing so he’ll make it very difficult for our batsmen."
