'Shattered' Worrall succumbs to injury

Redbacks quick might miss remainder of Shield season, striking a significant blow for his Ashes hopes

South Australia's nightmare JLT Sheffield Shield season has lurched from bad to worse with news swing bowler Dan Worrall will be racing the clock to play in his side's final match of the 2018-19 campaign.

Worrall limped out of the Redbacks' Shield clash with Western Australia in Perth with hamstring soreness, and joins fellow pacemen Chadd Sayers and Kane Richardson on the injury list for the beleaguered South Australians, who are yet to win a match this campaign and looking likely for the wooden spoon.

The 27-year-old has only played four Shield matches this season, claiming 20 wickets in the process, and looked to have returned from a lower-back injury in good form with 3-60 in the first innings in Perth.

However he was only able to get through one over in the second innings, and his potential absence from the remainder of the Shield season could cost him when it comes to selection for higher honours in the coming months.

"(Worrall's) really disappointed, he's devastated," said SA coach Jamie Siddons. "He knows it's a critical time for him.

"He bowled beautifully in the first innings and was set to the job for us in the second.

"He was looking for Australia A, or Ashes, and to win games for us – which is probably more disappointing for him.

"We'll do everything we can to get him back for the last game of the year, to give him a chance to push his claims, but he's pretty shattered at the moment."

Siddons lamented Tuesday's defeat as one that perhaps got away from his struggling side, but added the absence of three key pacemen at different times has hurt.

"I thought we had a chance yesterday, the wicket was offering a fair bit, with Worrall bowling so well and the other two or three doing a great job, we could've had a chance with 250 on the board," he added.

"But we didn't do the job. It's been a long time between drinks. We can win games, we've just got to play a little bit better.

"We've got three players in India playing well for Australia, which is a great thing, (and) we've got two bowlers who are broken who are probably our best performed bowlers over time.

"So it's a little bit of a rebuild if you like, with a lot of inexperience in the line-up."
