Royal Short's lessons from the King of Spin

Hurricane D'Arcy has more than one trick up his sleeve as he prepares to make an impact for Australia in England

T20 batting sensation D'Arcy Short has been working closely with leg-spin legend Shane Warne as he looks to provide Australia's limited-over teams with a valuable extra spin option.

Short was on Monday selected for Australia's ODI and T20I squads for the upcoming tours of the UK and Zimbabwe, and appears the first-choice option to replace the suspended David Warner alongside Aaron Finch in the opening slot.

National selector Trevor Hohns said as much when the squad was released, with Short's various talents also noted.

"D'Arcy is relatively new to one-day cricket but impressed us with his form in T20 cricket last season," Hohns said.

"He brings an all-round package to the side, with strong fielding and bowling skills and we believe he will combine very well with Aaron at the top of the order."

Short is currently playing his maiden Indian Premier League season with Rajasthan Royals, where he has linked up with Warne – the franchise's official 'team mentor'.

Short stands tall but Royals usurped

The two have been working together in training, with Warne offering the left-arm wrist-spinner some words of advice and key insights regarding game plan's and strategy as well as the craft itself.

"His cricket brain is just amazing really," Short told cricket.com.au. "The way he thinks is quite different, but you get why he thinks that way.

"Just the little things he picked up on, you wouldn't even think about. He's given me a few things to work on so hopefully I can get better. I've just been trying to learn off him, soak in as much as I can.

"He likes my bowling, so I guess that's a good thing.

"I'd like to hope I can get a bowl (in England) and contribute with that. I'll always be working on it so hopefully it's good enough for me to bowl in games and get wickets."

Short has only played 12 times for Western Australia in the one-day format but has collected 12 wickets at 33.75, conceding 5.19 runs per over.

The 27-year-old is uncapped at ODI level but his selection for the 50-over squad in England is a sign that new coach Justin Langer – who has worked with him closely at the Warriors – and fellow selectors have him earmarked as a potential World Cup inclusion.

Dominant D'Arcy makes Short work of CA XI

Given the tournament will also be held in England, next month's five-match series against the World Cup hosts and top-ranked ODI side looms as an audition of sorts for Australia's players.

While the 12-month bans of both Warner and Steve Smith will have ended prior to the World Cup, there appears a number of spots up for grabs in Australia's top seven, meaning the jostling for positions will be a fascinating plot across the next 12 months.

"It's an exciting time," Short said. "Hopefully I can take the opportunity with both hands.

"I guess (my World Cup chance) all depends on how I go on this tour – to see if I can contribute the way they want me to, and go from there.

"But I've been picked for a reason, so hopefully I can play my part."
