Short set to make big impact in India

Aussie top-order batter ready to play a role with the ball if required on Indian limited-overs tour

D'Arcy Short's damaging exploits with the bat are well known but it's his bowling that could make the biggest impact on Australia's Qantas Tour of India.

Short has been working with spin coach Sridharan Sriram, who "definitely" believes the left-arm wrist spinner can be more than just a part-time option for limited-overs skipper Aaron Finch.

"We've seen in the Big Bash, he's bowled a lot more than the previous years which I think is a very good sign for our cricket team going forward," Sriram said on Thursday in Hyderabad.

"He's come a long way. One of the main things we talked about was aligning his technique and then consistency of length.

"In international cricket it goes without saying, consistency of length is going to be very, very important.

"If he can do that and spin the ball both ways, which he does, when he's bowling at his best I think he offers a lot to the team along with his batting."

Short captured 10 wickets in 15 games for the Hurricanes this season to supplement his season-high 637 runs at 53.08 and a strike rate of 140.61.

The 28-year-old says he first worked with Sriram on Australia A's tour of India last year and that the spin guru had a clear message for him about his bowling.

"Just to keep things simple and keep my momentum going forward and energy through the crease," Short said when asked about Sriram's influence.

"I did a lot of work with him in the A tour in August and September. That was good then and I've done a bit of work with him yesterday and today, just refining things and getting a little bit better.

"If I can give two or three overs or even four or five in one-day cricket then it's always going to help my selection in the end and hopefully it goes in my favour."

When it comes to playing spin with the bat, Short has a similarly simple game plan.

"Just to try and hit the bad ball when it comes and try and score off every ball even if it’s a good ball," he said.

"I'll look to do that and go straight and see how it goes."

Short is in the 15-man squad as cover for Shaun Marsh who will join the tour after the birth of his second child.

Australia play the first of two T20 internationals in Vizag on Sunday night.
