Short claims top honour at BBL|08

Hobart Hurricanes opener D'Arcy Short has capped off an impressive BBL|08 by being named Player of the Tournament for a second consecutive season.

Short scored a whopping 637 runs at the Hurricanes this campaign, hitting six half centuries with a highest score of 96no to help his side finish as the minor premiers.

Votes were awarded by the standing umpires at the end of each match on a 3-2-1 system, with the left-hander polling 41 votes to finish nine votes ahead of Melbourne Stars allrounder Marcus Stoinis (32) and 13 ahead of Hurricanes teammate Matthew Wade (28).

Short also claimed 10 wickets with his left-arm spin at BBL|08, with his best haul a spell of 2-17 against the Perth Scorchers in Launceston.

The talented 28-year-old also claimed the honour at BBL|07, where he hammered 572 runs for the Hurricanes in a tally that included a tournament record score of 122.

Stoinis compiled 533 runs and took 14 wickets at the Melbourne Stars at BBL|08, while Wade finished as the second leading run scorer with a haul of 592 at the Hurricanes.

Rounding on the top five in the Player of the Tournament voting were Brisbane Heat captain Chris Lynn (21 votes) and Perth Scorchers batsman Ashton Turner (17).

Lynn scored four half centuries and amassed 385 runs for the Heat this campaign, while Turner managed 378 runs from 14 knocks for the Scorchers.

Sam Harper was also honoured, with the Melbourne Renegades wicketkeeper-batsman capping off a season to remember by being named the BBL|08 Young Gun as the leading vote-getter aged under 25.

Unsigned at the start of the tournament, Harper scored 341 runs to be the Renegades' leading run-scorer and helped his side to the Big Bash title with a stunning victory over the Stars on Sunday.

Harper's best score was 56no against the Brisbane Heat at the Gabba, while the 22-year-old scored a valuable 36 in the Renegades' thrilling semi-final triumph over the Sydney Sixers.
