Australia ready to turn tables on England

A comprehensive bowling performance against India has Australia confident heading into Wednesday's clash with England

Australia are confident they can turn the tables on England regardless of whether they win the toss ahead of Wednesday’s fifth T20I tri-series match in Mumbai, allrounder Ellyse Perry says.

On Monday, Australia became the first team to successfully defend a score from four T20I tri-series matches at Brabourne Stadium, claiming a 36-run win over India courtesy of a Megan Schutt hat-trick.

The flat wicket and fast outfield – and the potent batting line-ups possessed by both teams – make it likely big totals will again be the order of the day on Wednesday in what’s essentially a dead rubber given both teams have already secured their spots in Saturday’s final, but a crucial hit out nonetheless for the two teams.

“We’d mentioned that every side has elected to bowl first in these matches because of the conditions, so it was really nice that we put a great total on the board first up, which was in large part due to Beth Mooney and Elyse Villani, but to also defend it in the way we did, the bowling unit did a fantastic job,” Perry said in Mumbai on Tuesday of Australia's win against India.

“It gives us a bit of confidence that we know we can be versatile depending on how the match goes.”

England chased down 199 with ease against India earlier this week, courtesy of a Dani Wyatt century, while the powerful combination of Natalie Sciver and Tammy Beaumont handed Australia a similarly comprehensive defeat last Thursday - their third consecutive T20 loss to England following on from this summer's Ashes.

But Perry is confident of a better showing second time around against their Ashes rivals.

“They’re obviously quite potent players but from our point of view, bowling well yesterday and defending a total gave us a lot of confidence," she said.

“We’ve got to have clear plans and we have to be prepared to stick to them even though at times we’ll be put under pressure.

“Things change so quickly in T20s throughout an innings, so as long as we take our opportunities, those half chances, then you’re in with a great shout.

“It’s a good challenge for us, they’re playing good cricket and I think we are too.”

England secure big win over Australia

The final two matches in Mumbai are the last international games Australia will play before a six-month wait for their next contest. With a World T20 looming in November, Perry said the Southern Stars had to make the most of every opportunity to refine their 20-over cricket.

"I don’t think there’s been any language around the team of this being a dead rubber,” she said.

"It’s a great opportunity for our team for a couple of reasons; firstly, we just want to keep momentum in T20 cricket, especially heading into a final.

"But also this period of time for us as a team is so crucial in terms of the way we want to develop our style of play, for the girls to have opportunity to get used to their roles in the team and executing plans because this year is so important for T20 cricket.

"So any competitive match we have against great opposition is a really great chance for that and everyone is taking that really seriously."

Play will begin at 10am local time on Thursday (3.30pm AEDT) with the match to be broadcast live in Australia on Fox Sports, while cricket.com.au will provide live scores, news and highlights.
