England confirm bowling change for fourth Test

Skipper Joe Root reveals Chris Woakes will sit out at Old Trafford, with Craig Overton taking his place

England captain Joe Root has confirmed fast bowler Craig Overton will replace Chris Woakes for the fourth Ashes Test in Manchester.

Overton's recall is the only change to England's XI that won the thrilling third Test in Leeds by just one wicket.

"That extra bit of bounce of a taller bowler gives us a slightly different option to go to," said Root.

"I feel like that balances our attack out really well in these conditions.

"He's a competitor. You saw him come into Ashes cricket on debut and looked very much at home and got himself in a battle.

"I expect him to do that again this week."

Overton made his Test debut against Australia in Adelaide on the 2017-18 Ashes tour, and captured the prized scalp of Steve Smith for his maiden Test wicket.

Root also confirmed the positional switch of Joe Denly and Jason Roy. Roy, who has averaged just 9.50 at the top of the order this Ashes, will bat at No.4 with Denly to open the batting alongside Rory Burns.

"It's not gone exactly how we'd have liked and (Roy) hasn't scored the runs he would have liked. We're trying to find a formula at the top of the order that works for us," Root said.

"Jason is a high-quality player and could be better suited to four.

"We all know what he can do when he gets himself in and hopefully batting a little lower down helps him to do that."
