Big Maxi score around the corner: Langer

New Australia coach impressed with work ethic of Victorian batsman, believes it will result in runs against England

Head coach Justin Langer has backed Glenn Maxwell to deliver when it matters as Australia prepare for their ODI series opener against England on Wednesday.

Maxwell made scores of one and three in Australia's two warm-up matches in England, a disappointing pair of returns that followed on from a lean run in the IPL.

But Langer is unconcerned about the form of the right-hander, who was player of the tournament in Australia's T20I tri-series in February, and in recent weeks has impressed Langer with his commitment and work ethic in training.

"I have been super impressed with Glenn Maxwell, his preparation has been literally outstanding," Langer said after Australia's win over Middlesex at Lord's on Saturday.

"I would be very surprised if he doesn't get a very big score very soon.

"There's been a lot of talk about Glenn Maxwell but I have been incredibly impressed with the way he goes about his business.

"Even the way he has been batting in the nets, (and) he played at Whitgift School a week ago (in Australia's intra-squad practice match) and he was the man of the match that day.

"I am sure a big one is not far away from him."

Maxwell was recalled to Australia's ODI squad in January and spent April-May working under Delhi Daredevils head coach Ricky Ponting, who has been a long-term mentor for the Victorian.

Ponting has linked up with the Australian squad in a coaching capacity and Langer believes that too will be beneficial in bringing out the best in Maxwell.

"He has just had a couple of months with 'Punter' (Ponting) in the IPL – to have the influence of someone like Punter is gold," Langer added.

"So if he keeps preparing well and keeps trusting his preparation it is not far until he becomes an absolute star, I think.

"He's got so much talent. He's working as hard as anyone. You see his fielding, he just brings it to life – he is an outstanding fielder."

Match wrap: Aussies dominate at Lord's

While citing a preference for a position in the top four, Maxwell looks more likely to stay in his usual No.5 position, with providing some insights as to how he sees the middle order ahead of the first ODI at The Oval in London.

"I love the idea of Shaun Marsh and Marcus Stoinis batting at three and four," he said. "They're like two gladiators … they're big, strong boys, we know they can get hundreds, we know they can bat for a long time."

With Tim Paine and Ashton Agar looking like occupying the six and seven slots, and Aaron Finch and Travis Head – who made a century on Saturday – presenting strong cases for opening positions, T20 sensation D'Arcy Short could be the batsman to miss out on selection.
