Maxi on his shoulder, and expectations

Glenn Maxwell is continuing to carefully manage his right shoulder as he prepares for an intense period of cricket, potentially beginning with the Pakistan Test series in October.

Maxwell injured the joint in the field during the ODI series against England in June, and was limited in activities during Victoria's three-day training camp at the HMAS Cerberus Naval Base this week.

"There was a lot of fluid built up around the bursa, and that was pinching," he said. "My range of movement was restricted quite a bit – it still is a little bit.

"I can't reach fully above my head consistently. Every now and then it just pinches.

"I was able to get through with the T20 series in Zimbabwe (after England) and just find a way to throw comfortably, and by the end of that series I felt like I was throwing really well.

"But once I got home it was about making sure I could sustain it for the rest of my career. That's what this period is about now."

Maxwell and Shaun Marsh were the batsmen excluded from the upcoming Australia A tour to India, with their omission presumably putting them in the box seat for selection as part of the Test squad for the two-match series against Pakistan.

With Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft all suspended, new coach Justin Langer is in a position to put his own stamp on the Test batting order.

Langer has long been an advocate of Marsh, though Maxwell's inconsistencies in red-ball cricket over the years have resulted in him having three separate stints in Baggy Green

All seven of those Tests have come in Asia however, with the Victorian considered one of the country's finest players of spin.

In England, Langer was impressed with what he saw from Maxwell.

"There's been a lot of talk about Glenn Maxwell but I have been incredibly impressed with the way he goes about his business and even the way he has been batting in the nets," he said. "I am sure a big one is not far away from him."

The 29-year-old however, is refusing to buy into his non-selection on the Australia A tour.

"As far as UAE is concerned, you can't really count on selection," Maxwell said.

"You've just got to basically get yourself ready for what is in the foreseeable future. If selection goes my way – I really hope it does – I'll be ready for that."
