Test recall still on Maxwell's radar

The Australia allrounder wants to win a recall to the Test side

Talented allrounder Glenn Maxwell still harbours aspirations to return to the Australia Test side later this year.

Maxwell has played just seven Test matches for his country, with his most recent appearance coming against Bangladesh in Chittagong in September last year.

His Test record isn’t overly flash, with the 29-year-old averaging a little over 26 with the bat and a whopping 42 with the ball.

But Maxwell believes he is a more mature player now and is hoping to build on his good recent form in the limited overs arena to earn a recall to the Test side.

"I would love an opportunity to play in the Test team again," Maxwell said following his match-winning Twenty20 half-century for Australia against Zimbabwe on Friday.

"I have had mixed opportunities with the Test side and probably haven’t quite grabbed it with both hands every time I have had the opportunity.

"If I do get the opportunity I will hopefully take it with both hands this time."

Maxwell's stylish 56 against Zimbabwe was his second big Twenty20 score of 2018, following his unbeaten 103 for his country against England in Hobart in February.

His 2018 form in the 50-over game has been solid, more than spectacular, with the right hander boasting scores of 34, 62, 31 and 19 from four matches against England.

But it's consistency and a place in the Test side that Maxwell strives for and the right hander is looking forward to getting back to Australia following the tri-series final against Pakistan and working hard to earn it.

Maxwell is planning to skip Australia A's tour of India in September and instead concentrate on the two-Test series against Pakistan in the UAE in October.

"I think between now and the UAE it will just be a lot of training and making sure my body is right for that tour," Maxwell said.

"I was hoping to go on it (Australia A's tour of India), but as they pointed out I have been to India 16 or 17 times so there is no real need for me to go over there and prove what I can do.

"I got a Test hundred over there (India) last year and hopefully I can get up to Brisbane (to the Bupa National Cricket Centre) if I get the chance to go up there."
