Blow for 'Canes as Matthews hobbles off

Star West Indian recruit suffers apparent leg injury during WBBL clash with Melbourne Stars in Burnie

Hobart Hurricanes have suffered a major blow with star import Hayley Matthews suffering a leg injury during their Rebel WBBL clash with the Melbourne Stars in Burnie.

West Indian allrounder Matthews had raced to 42 from just 30 deliveries in the 10th over but fell awkwardly while attempting to quickly turn and get back to her crease at the non-striker's end.

She immediately clutched the back of her right leg, appearing to have hurt her knee.

To add insult to injury, she was run out by bowler Nicola Hancock, but it mattered little with Matthews needing to be assisted from the field by medical staff.

It’s a major blow for both Matthews and the Hurricanes, with the West Indian having already missed the first match of the season due to a toe injury.

She scored just 18 runs in her first appearance of the season on Saturday, but was hitting her straps in Sunday’s match, finding the boundary four times and clearing it twice during a 98-run stand with Indian star Smriti Mandhana.

The pair had carried the Hurricanes to 1-104 from 9.4 overs before Matthew’s unfortunate injury and dismissal.

More to come.
