England stars shine bright in latest rankings

Bairstow and Stokes headline the movers and shakers in the latest ICC Test rankings

Wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow has climbed into the top 10 of the ICC's Test batting rankings following England's third Test win over South Africa.

Bairstow made scores of 36 and 63, the second of those the top score in England's second innings, as the hosts wrapped up a 304-run success at The Oval to take a 2-1 series lead.

That doubled propelled him into ninth position, sandwiched between Proteas pair Quinton de Kock (down two places) in eighth and Hashim Amla (down three places) in 10th.

His England teammate Ben Stokes surged 12 spots in the batting charts following his superb first-innings hundred, climbing into a career-high 25th spot.

Stokes also took three wickets to move up two places into 19th – another career-high for the allrounder who continues to stake his claim as one of the world's most complete players.

Stokes' excellent double also sees him climb into fifth spot ahead on the allrounders list, ahead of South African Vernon Philander.

England debutants Tom Westley (70th) and Toby Roland-Jones (54th) enter the rankings in style among batsmen and bowlers respectively.

Dean Elgar's outstanding second-innings of 136 pushed him up three places to 15th, while left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj, who took four wickets, climbs four places to 22nd.

Shikhar Dhawan's spectacular 190 against Sri Lanka lifted the India opener 21 places to 39th, while his teammate Ravi Ashwin jumped back ahead of Rangana Herath into second spot among bowlers, with Ravi Jadeja retaining the number one ranking.

All four teams are in action again later this week, with Sri Lanka hosting India in the second Test in Colombo from Thursday, and England and South Africa heading to Old Trafford in Manchester for the fourth and final Test.
