Incredible series not being overshadowed

With one nation focused on the Ashes and the other thinking only about "Sachin's series", it's easy to forget the one-day contest between Australia and India is for the world No.1 ranking.

But while India readies itself for the final two Test of Sachin Tendulkar's remarkable cricket career and Australia ponders the makeup of its Gabba line-up, a fascinating battle is taking place on the field.

Australia's successful chase of 304, with three balls and four wickets to spare, in Saturday's third ODI in Mohali squared the ledger at one mind-boggling victory each this series.

In many ways Australia's win, which gives them a 2-1 series lead, overtook India's record-breaking chase in Jaipur three days before as the most unlikely.

QUICK SINGLE: Faulkner inspires thrilling win

Records have fallen at every turn.

India's highest ever successful chase of 1-362 was also the second-highest of all-time.

In it, Virat Kohli's magnificent 100no off 52 balls was the fastest ODI century by an Indian and the fastest scored against Australia.

Australia's chase on Saturday was their best in India and their fourth best chase of all-time.

While Australian all-rounder James Faulkner's one-over blitz against Ishant Sharma, where he took 30 runs to change the game, has only been bettered four times in the 50-over game.

"To be brutally honest I suppose it's been an unbelievable series so far in the first three games," said Faulkner, whose explosive 64 off 29 deliveries stole victory from India in Mohali.

"Every single team that's batted first has posted over 300.

"It's been a really good series so far and I'm sure there's going to be some strong cricket played for the last four games."

Should Australia prevail in the last four matches of the series they will take the No.l ranking off India - a target that has not escaped the tourists.

And it's this goal which Faulkner attributes as the primary reason for the unbelievable results seen in the opening three matches.

"Obviously we are ranked one and two for a reason," he said.

"You have seen that in the series how close the games are and the totals that have been scored."
