Cartwright debuts, India bat first

Allrounder becomes ODI player No.221 for Australia but will have to wait to bat

Hilton Cartwright will make his one-day international debut and Australia will bowl first in the first ODI against India in Chennai.

Cartwright was presented his maiden cap by former Australia fast bowler Brett Lee and will start his one-day career in the field after India skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat at MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Travis Head, as forecast by captain Steve Smith on match eve, will bat at No.4, while allrounder James Faulkner returns to the ODI XI for the first time since February having been overlooked for June’s Champions Trophy campaign.

Smith is expecting large totals during the five-match series and has put the onus on his top order to produce a sizeable innings.

"It's important for someone in the top four to go on and make a big score and we've got the guys in there to do that," Smith said on Saturday.

"We saw the last time we came here in 2013 it was a run-fest where 350 was around par.

“So if the wickets are the same you need someone to go on and make a really big score."

Pat Cummins and Nathan Coulter-Nile will lead the pace attack, the latter playing his first ODI in 15 months having been sidelined with injury.
