India's bowlers rated among the best ever

India's bowling coach Bharat Arun reckons his current crop of pacemen are among the best the country has ever produced, and says spinner Ravi Ashwin is like a fine wine.

India's bowlers played a key role in their 31-run win over Australia in the first Domain Test in Adelaide.

Jasprit Bumrah excelled with figures of 3-47 and 3-68, while Mohammed Shami (2-58 and 3-65) also played a crucial hand.

Ashwin powered through a mountain of work to finish with match figures of 6-149 from 86.5 overs, and veteran paceman Ishant Sharma played his part with the wickets of Aaron Finch, Tim Paine, and Travis Head.

Arun was thrilled with the effort of his bowling group - not only in Adelaide, but in conditions all around the world this year.

In the three-Test series in South Africa, the Proteas passed 300 just once.

And India's bowlers also performed strongly in the five-Test tour of England, when the hosts made it past 300 only four times.

"Consistency was a a big issue earlier. That's something we've addressed with the bowlers. This is something we've worked really hard on," Arun said.

"It's a great feeling now that the fast bowlers are doing a great job. It's not just one or two, it's a bunch of bowlers who are doing well.

"I can say that (with) what they've done over a period of time in South Africa, in England, and now in Australia, this is probably one of the best group of fast bowlers that India has ever had."

Arun also lavished praise on Ashwin, who has taken 342 wickets in 65 Tests at an average of 25.43.

"Spinners mature a lot with age. Maybe they're like wine," Arun said.

"Ashwin has been really good. He gave us the control (in Adelaide), bowling close to 90 overs for (149) runs and six wickets - you can't ask anything better."

With a fast and bouncy wicket expected for the second Test at Perth Stadium, Arun said his bowlers would need to stick to their plan and not get carried away by the conditions.
