Injured Goswami out of ODI series

India will be without their greatest ever wicket-taker for their upcoming one-day internationals against Australia, with Jhulan Goswami ruled out of the three-match series with a heel injury.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India named a 15-player squad for the matches in Vadodara on Tuesday, with Goswami remaining on the sidelines after being ruled out of the away T20 series against South Africa earlier this month.

Goswami, who has taken more wickets than anyone else in women's ODIs, is the major change to the 16-player squad which defeated South Africa 2-1 in early February, replaced by Sukanya Parida, with back-up keeper Taniya Bhatia also missing.

India opener Smriti Mandhana was named player of that series against South Africa after knocks of 84 and 135 in the first two games, despite being dismissed for a three-ball duck in the third and final game.

Veda Krishnamurthy also impressed with back-to-back fifties, while Poonam Yadav (seven wickets at 14.00) and Goswami (five at 10.60) did the most damage with the ball for India.

The group also features exciting young guns Pooja Vastrakar and Jemimah Rodrigues.

Vastrakar, 18, made her international debut against South Africa in early February before stepping up in the absence of Goswami in the T20 series, taking four wickets and bowling economically.

Seventeen-year-old middle-order batter Rodrigues’ three innings for the series included knocks of 37 (27) and 44 (34).

Rodrigues also attracted worldwide attention – including praise from legend Sachin Tendulkar – for a superb boundary catch in the fifth T20I.

The three ODI matches will count towards the ICC Women’s Championship, which determines the team who gain automatic places in the 2021 50-over World Cup in New Zealand.

The ODIs will be followed by a T20 tri-series, also featuring England, with the series to serve as preparation for this November’s World T20 in the Caribbean.

The third and final ODI in South Africa also marked the conclusion of round one of the Women’s Championship.

West Indies sit on top of the table on six points, having secured a 3-0 series win over Sri Lanka in October, while Australia, India and New Zealand all sit on four points.
