Anderson's new do lights up Old Trafford

England quick's new haircut has social media talking as injured veteran Marcus Trescothick posts a century

A new look for England quick Jimmy Anderson took some of the focus away from 42-year-old Marcus Trescothick at Old Trafford on Friday, the former England opener scoring his 66th first-class hundred despite suffering a broken foot.

Scorecard: Lancashire v Somerset

Anderson, playing his first match of the season, had local fans reaching for their binoculars when he emerged for Lancashire sporting a new bleached blond hair cut in the match against Somerset.

The right-armer finished with 0-70 from 19 overs, but it was his hair that had social media talking as much as his bowling as Somerset finished the day on 5-321.

Anderson, whose naturally dark hair is normally cut short, has made a handful of fashion statements over the years; he emerged onto the international scene with blond tips in his hair, while he also sported a 'red skunk' look early in his Test career.

While in-form Australian Matthew Renshaw was dismissed for 21, his opening partner Trescothick pushed on to another century in a career that is now into its 25th year.

Trescothick, whose 76-Test career ended due to a stress-related condition in 2006, made exactly 100 while George Bartlett's 110, his maiden first-class hundred, helped the visitors take the honours on the opening day.

There was no hint of the trouble to come when left-hander Trescothick, on 95, played a ball from Matt Parkinson defensively on the leg side and collapsed.

He needed the assistance of a runner to complete a 137-ball century and Somerset coach Jason Kerr confirmed after play that the veteran isn't yet certain to return this season.

"It's just been confirmed that Marcus has got a broken right fifth metatarsal so he'll be out for the foreseeable future," Kerr said.

"But it's too early to say whether he'll be back later in the season.

"We need to get clarity on the extent of the break. If it's a clean break, it's just a few weeks' recovery and then we'll get him back on his feet."

Lancashire's Australian quick Joe Mennie was the pick of the home side's bowlers, taking 2-59.
