Jonassen crowned No.1 ODI bowler

Australian players rise up the ICC rankings after a dominant display against India

Australia’s crushing one-day series whitewash against India has brought some big movements in the ICC Player Rankings, with Jess Jonassen crowned the new world No.1 ODI bowler.

The left-arm spinner has climbed to the top of the charts after taking eight wickets in three matches against India, while Australia spearhead Megan Schutt sits in second spot after a brilliantly economical display.

The pair moved ahead of South Africa quick Marizanne Kapp and India great Jhulan Goswami, who did not feature in the series due to injury.

Jonassen had a career-best 676 points to be No.1 on the rankings announced on 19 March, ahead of fellow Australian Megan Schutt.

Schutt picked up four wickets for the series but applied incredible pressure to India in the opening two matches, finishing the series with an economy rate of 3.87.

Jonassen’s rise ensures Australians now hold the No.1 position in all three ODI categories, with Ellyse Perry ranked the world’s best batter and allrounder.

Match Wrap: Healy ton powers India series clean sweep

Meanwhile, opener Nicole Bolton was rewarded for her outstanding series with the bat, jumping nine spots into equal-fourth position alongside India captain Mithali Raj.

Bolton promised a new-look, more aggressive version of herself in the ODI series and duly delivered with a player-of-the-series performance.

She posted scores of 100no, 84 and 11 across the three-match series, a total of 195 runs at 97.50.

It means Australia now boast three of the top five ODI batters, with Perry at No.1, followed by Meg Lanning at No.3 – the pair separated by New Zealand captain Suzie Bates, whose own recent good form elevated her into second spot – before Bolton and Raj.

Leading into the series, Bolton pledged to make the most of strong form in the Rebel WBBL to take a more aggressive approach to her one-day batting.

Across the three matches her strike rate was94.20, a leap from her career mark of 73.66.

“I’m committed to what we’re speaking about as a batting group, about being fearless,” Bolton said before the first ODI.

“I think sometimes we’ve been guilty of leaving a bit in the tank and coasting through.

“I think I’ve maybe been in first gear a bit in my one-day cricket.

“I’m always looking for ways to challenge myself and create a few more opportunities.

“I’m coming off a WBBL where I learnt a bit more about my game and what strengths I can add to taking on the bowlers.”

Healy smashes first international century

Bolton isn’t the only Australian to benefit from the 3-0 whitewash win, with Alyssa Healy climbing to 16th in the batting charts following her maiden international century on Sunday.

Australia also remained the No.1 spot on the team rankings following the series win and sit a sole point ahead of England heading into this week’s T20I tri-series.
