Mennie recovering from blow at training

Sixers paceman escapes serious injury after nasty incident ahead of BBL semi-final

Sydney Sixers bowler Joe Mennie has escaped serious injury after being felled by a ball during BBL training.

Mennie was preparing for Wednesday's semi-final against Brisbane Heat when he was struck in the head at the Gabba on Monday.

He was given a concussion test before being taken to hospital for observation.

Veteran Brad Haddin said the 28-year-old was "lucky just to get through with a headache".

"It was a bit of a scary incident actually. He was bowling in the nets and Michael Lumb got hold of one straight back and he's followed through and got him in the head," Haddin told Sky Sports Radio.

"It was a bit uncomfortable for a couple of minutes but lucky Joe's all right and he's available for selection."

However, Mennie has been left out of the Sixers line-up for the cut-throat final.

"I don't know too much about it, he's seeing the doctor now," Sixers batsman Daniel Hughes told reporters.

"Joe's been outstanding for us. He hasn't played many games but he's just great around the group, bowling in the nets, talking about bowling and all that sort of stuff. Hopefully he's okay."

The Sixers confirmed the incident.

"Joe Mennie was struck in the side of his head while bowling during yesterday’s training session and was taken to hospital for assessment and treatment," a spokeswoman said.

"He was monitored and released last night with no complications and will see Cricket Australia doctors today to map out a return to play timeline."

Mennie, who made his Test debut for Australia in November, joined the Sixers in April following three summers with the Hurricanes.

He was last summer’s leading Sheffield Shield wicket-taker and made his Test debut against South Africa in Hobart in November.

But Mennie was one of the players to pay the price for Australia’s innings an 80-run defeat and was dropped after returning 1-85 from 28 overs in South Africa’s only innings.

"After a loss like that you knew there was always going to be changes and I didn’t really want to guess too much," Mennie told cricket.com.au last month.

"As the (selector’s) call came through you understood, that’s the way the world is.

"It was very disappointing, I would’ve loved another crack but the way it is you talk to anyone that’s been dropped and they would’ve loved another shot.

"That’s the same for most.

"There’s always going to be changes and that’s the way it is."

Mennie has made two appearances for the Sixers, who secured a finals berth with a thrilling victory over the Melbourne Stars at the MCG on Saturday night, and has collected two wickets.

He has claimed 15 wickets at 25.20 from four Sheffield Shield matches for South Australia in 2016-17.
