Holland spins out of JLT Cup

Victoria lose second key bowler to injury after tweaker going under the knife with knee complaint

Former Australia Test spinner Jon Holland has been ruled out of the JLT One-Day Cup on the eve of Victoria's first match following knee surgery.

Holland, who played two Tests for Australia a year ago on the Qantas Tour of Sri Lanka after being called up as a last-minute injury replacement, will be sidelined for up to a month.

The Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers said Holland's injury was "simply a case of wear and tear" and surgery was a precautionary measure.

The spinner reported discomfort in his knee after training more than a week ago, but made the trip to Perth anyway, only for the injury to flare up against following Victoria's first net session in Perth last Tuesday.

Holland had "minor surgery" on Wednesday to reduce the swelling on his right knee.

Cricket Victoria Sports Science & Sports Medicine (SSSM) Manager Nick Adcock said the medical team had taken a precautionary approach early in the season.

"Jon reported some discomfort in his right knee following training last week. Initial scans proved inconclusive but Jon continued to feel some discomfort while bowling in Perth and we decided surgery would be the best option ahead of the season," Adcock said.

"The surgery on his right knee was successful, and we're hopeful Jon can return to training after 2-4 weeks recovery."

Veteran leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed will replace Holland in the squad while Victoria will play their first JLT Cup match against Western Australia tomorrow at the WACA.

Ahmed is the second injury replacement for Victoria in this tournament after Xavier Crone was called in to the squad on Tuesday after Australia fast bowler John Hastings injured his back at training last week.
