Langer has faith in Marsh brothers

The Australian coach expects both Shaun and Mitch Marsh to continue their good form in the upcoming Test series against India

Justin Langer has thrown his support behind veteran Shaun Marsh, urging the left-hander and his brother Mitchell to block out the public criticism and continue to score runs.

After a horror tour of the UAE, the older Marsh brother has returned to form with an impressive return to the JLT Sheffield Shield and a one-day hundred against South Africa to seemingly secure his spot for the next month Domain Test Series against India.

The left-hander has long been a target of vicious public criticism and his disappointing performance against Pakistan last month, when he scored 14 runs in four innings, only fanned the flames.

Langer says he's been ‘confused' by the vocal condemnation of Marsh at times and urged his player to keep his focus on the field.

"That noise we're talking about, you can't get distracted by it," Langer told TAB Radio.

"Mental toughness and concentration is about letting go. Do your thing, enjoy what you're doing and when he (Marsh) does it, there's no better player in Australia.

"It does confuse me. He had a poor series against Pakistan and he'd be the first to admit that but around that he does so many good things.

"He's such a good player when he lets go and plays with that freedom he is a world-class player."

Speaking after his ODI hundred against the Proteas in Hobart last Sunday, Marsh said taking a short break from the game after the UAE tour has been key to turning his recent fortunes around.

"It was nice to come home (from the UAE), I had a few days off and just got away from cricket for a few days," the Perth native said.

Marsh shines with ODI century No.6

"I just wanted to come back and play with that freedom and I thought I did in that Shield game. Moving forward, I've just got to keep trying to bat like that.

"I just stayed away from cricket. I just chilled out on the boat and went over to 'Rotto' (Rottnest Island) for a day and just got away from cricket just to refresh the mind.

"It was a disappointing tour for me, so I just wanted to come home and recharge the batteries and it's worked well for me."

Shaun's brother Mitchell has also long been a target for criticism and his Test batting average dropped to 26 after he, like his brother, and a disappointing series in the UAE.

Marsh responds to critics with fluent 80 in Perth

But like Shaun, Mitchell has responded in style, scoring 151 in the Shield last week and Langer said the allrounder needed to simply focus on his task on the field.

"Mitch had a poor series against Pakistan, not a great series against South Africa but his first-class cricket in recent times is as good as anyone," Langer said.

"They're both very talented players and both very good young men so let's just hope they continue their good form and we see a lot more of them."

The Marsh brothers will get another chance to impress in WA's Shield clash against South Australia this week.
