CPL to review Pollard no ball

Caribbean Premier League to review Pollard incident in the interests of "fair play and good sportsmanship"

The Caribbean Premier League has announced it will review the controversial no ball bowled by West Indian star Kieron Pollard earlier this week.

Pollard was slammed by some cricket fans on Monday (AEST) after bowling what appeared to be a deliberate no ball to deny opponent Evin Lewis a century.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the CPL confirmed it will look further into the incident in the interests of "fair play and good sportsmanship".

"The Hero CPL are very concerned by any suggestion that the action of any player can be considered to have brought the game or the league into disrepute," the statement read.

"Cricket owes so much of its unique appeal to the spirit in which the game is played and as a cricket tournament the Hero CPL understand the importance of fair play and good sportsmanship."

St Kitts and Nevis opener Lewis had raced to 97 from just 32 deliveries and was on strike with the scores level when Pollard took the ball at the beginning of the eighth over.

But the batsman was denied the chance to reach triple figures as Pollard overstepped the front line by some margin and produced a wayward, short-pitched delivery that was called a no ball, gifting St Kitts the win.

Pollard’s actions were widely criticised on social media, while commentator and former New Zealand quick Danny Morrison said he was "disappointed" by the anti-climactic finish to the match.

"(Lewis’ innings) deserved a hundred and I've got to say, as positive and excited as I am, it’s a pretty disappointing way for Pollard to finish the game," Morrison said.

Lewis said he was disappointed to miss out on his century, but was nonetheless pleased with his stunning knock.

"It hurts (missing out on the hundred), but hitting 97 not out off 33 balls? I'll take that any day," he said.

"I've been hitting the ball long and hard in the nets. I’m confident now and looking forward to the playoffs."
