Young talent time with World Cup spots up for grabs

Australia's brightest young talent will be out to impress national selectors this weekend ahead of the first ever female Under-19 World Cup

Australia's brightest young talent will have a chance to make their cases for selection in the first ever Under-19 Women's T20 World Cup this weekend, with a series of exhibition matches to be staged in Brisbane.

The Under-19 Lanning v Perry series will see an extended squad of 25 players face off against each other in three T20 matches over two days at the National Cricket Campus.

The cohort includes several young guns who have made a name for themselves in the Weber WBBL in recent seasons, including Hobart Hurricanes leg-spinner Amy Smith and Melbourne Renegades off-spinner Ella Hayward.

The matches will act as the first of several opportunities for players to put their name forward for the ICC's inaugural U19 Women's T20 World Cup, to be staged in South Africa in January 2023.

Players aged 18 or younger on August 31 – last Wednesday – are eligible for selection at the tournament.

That means promising Brisbane Heat allrounder Georgia Voll just misses out, having turned 19 earlier in the month, but selectors will have a strong crop of talent to choose from; twelve players in the Lanning v Perry squad hold senior state contracts and are set to feature in the upcoming domestic one-day season beginning September 24.

Amy Smith's WBBL wickets ... so far

Eligible players with WBBL and WNCL contracts can continue to push their cases during a busy domestic schedule in the coming months before the final selection calls are made following the U19 National Championships in December.

Watching carefully this weekend will be former Australia pace bowler Sarah Aley, who has been appointed head coach of the Australian Under-19 team.

She will be supported by assistant coaches Erin Osborne and Dulip Samaraweera.

Aley will attend the Lanning v Perry series as a selector, while former Australia spinner Osborne and Victoria assistant coach Samaraweera will mentor the two teams.

Hayward knocks over Lanning in dream start

"After the difficulties presented by the pandemic in the past two seasons, we're thrilled the Lanning v Perry Series will return this year as part of what has become an extensive player pathway for the best young female cricketers across Australia," Cricket Australia's Head of Women's Performance Shawn Flegler said.

"It's an exciting period coming up for this age group with the inaugural Women's U19 T20 World Cup in January and this series is the first of several opportunities for players to put their name forward for selection.

"With a number of WBBL and WNCL contracted players involved in the series, we're looking forward to an exceptionally high standard of cricket across the three matches."

All three Lanning v Perry matches will be live streamed on FrogBox.
