Beefy reflect on his own pig run-in

A man has been charged after police stopped a spectator from releasing a pig onto the field during day one of the first Test at the Gabba on Thursday.

Ian Botham has reflected on his own run-in with a pig at a cricket match, after police earlier confirmed a man had been charged with animal cruelty following an incident on day one of the Commonwealth Bank Ashes Test at the Gabba.

The pig, whose name is Ash, was taken to the RSPCA to be treated for dehydration.

A picture of the pig was circulated on social media, with the animal appearing to have black tape across its mouth.

Some reports suggested the pig had "Broad" written on its side, in reference to English bowler Stuart Broad, who was vilified in some circles for failing to walk when he edged a ball during the last Ashes series.

Security at the ground would not confirm if this was the case.

The incident was reminiscent of another at the Gabba, back in the 1982-83 season, when fans set loose a pig with "Botham" and "Eddie" written on its sides during a one-day match, in reference to England players Ian Botham and Eddie Hemmings.

At the MCG in the 1986-87 Ashes series, a pig was released at the ground with "Gatting" emblazoned on its side in a dig at English batsman Mike Gatting.
