Caribbean success for Gurney's Tridents

Englishman shines on the big stage to help his side claim the Caribbean Premier League trophy

Melbourne Renegades seamer Harry Gurney picked up two crucial wickets to help the Barbados Tridents claim the Caribbean Premier League title on Saturday.

Gurney finished with impressive figures of 2-24 from his four overs as the Tridents clinched the title with a 27-run victory over the Guyana Amazon Warriors.

The Tridents posted a respectable total of 6-171 from their 20 overs at Tarouba and some clutch bowling from Raymon Reifer (4-24) and Gurney meant the Amazon Warriors fell short.

Johnson Charles (39) and Englishman Alex Hales (28) got the Tridents off to a fast start and some big late-order hitting from Jonathan Carter (50 not out) ensured the Amazon Warriors would have to score at more than eight runs an over to prevail.

Their run chase started poorly with Chandrapaul Hemraj dismissed in the second over and wickets continued to fall at regular intervals as the required run rate grew.

Ashley Nurse (2-17) kept the clamps on the Amazon Warriors and Gurney provided the finishing touches during the closing stages to ensure the Tridents held on.

Carter was named player of the match for his quickfire 50 from 27 balls, while Reifer (14 wickets) and Gurney (13) were both inside the top five for most wickets during the tournament.

Australian duo Chris Green (0-32) and Ben Laughlin (1-28) were part of the unsuccessful Tridents' side, but the pair had excellent tournaments to finish with 13 and eight wickets respectively.
